Welcome to our first “golden points” article, where like our podcast segment, you can expect some of the latest bite sized news and results from around the rugby league world.
Serbia Partizan Belgrade have taken home the Serbian Cup with a huge 80-8 victory in the final against Radnicki Nis. This is the first Serbian final in four years not to feature Red Star Belgrade which highlights the more even spread and diversity in the league this season.
Fiji The Kaiviti Silktails move to 6th on the Ron Massey Cup table after a convincing 42-20 win over the Ryde Eastwood Hawks over the weekend. Winger Timoci Bola and hooker Apimeleki Lutuimawi scoring doubles as the Fijian club continue a 5 game winning streak after a slow start to the season.
The Silktails will enjoy a bye this weekend before taking on the second placed Hills Bulls on May 22.
France The French Federation has confirmed that the six-again rule will be enforced from this weekend onwards following the NRL trend.
USA NARL side the New York Freedom have terminated the contract of Tony Williams after the former NRL and Origin players comments on social media relating to the Jarrod Hayne sentencing.
Chasing Kanagroos can confirm the Freedom are preparing to announce a new big name signing to take Williams’ place.
World Cup 2021 Rugby League World Cup debutants Jamaica and Greece will face each other for the first time in a warm up game ahead of the tournament.
The nations will meet on Friday 15 October at Castleford’s Mend-a-Hose stadium.
Nicaragua The Chasing Kangaroos sponsored Mercenarios are the Chinandega 9s Champions! They defeated Monseraptors in the final 18 - 6 and have won the Novosports Cup.
Netherlands Rugby League returns to the Netherlands as covid restrictions ease.
NRLB domestic clubs will return to the field to compete in a 9’s League from 26th June! It will also be the first competitive matches for Dordrecht Griffins!
Americas The 2021 Americas Championship has been cancelled, due to ongoing logistical difficulties for the region caused by covid-19. European Rugby League (who currently oversee the America’s region) have reported that the tournament originally scheduled for Kingston, Jamaica in 2020 featuring Chile, USA, Canada and Jamaica has now been further delayed until 2022.
Nigeria Round 2 results from the Nigerian Southern conference are in with plenty of tries scored.
Middle East Africa The Middle East Africa Steering Committee has put forward a new representative format which features a proposed four-tier competition with promotion and relegation. The plan is to have an MEA Cup, Championship, League and Regionals, with each tier determined by membership status criteria.
Montenegro Montenegro’s application to become an Observer member of the European Rugby League has been formally approved. Confirmation comes two months after the first-ever club game took place with locals RLC South Region playing host to Radnicki Belgrade in the Serbian First Division.
